algorithm
My knowledge (a fact - small in this matter) tells me that the balance of nature is needed. When a species gains an advantage over others, their numbers begin to rise, however, to time. When running low on food sources - as a result of starvation and probably fratricidal struggle for survival - there is a drastic decline in its numbers. Why such a fate not met humanity, which for centuries the dominant species on this planet? Perhaps the primary factor here is the fact that mankind has developed technology that allowed her to step up food production (actually, a technology first allowed us to dominate the other species). It seems to me that it is and the second factor, which de facto motivated mankind to further technology development and also limited the size of our species, and eliminate the weaker structures and units. Factor, which in a sense taken over the role of nature with its natural selection. You can to describe it as an algorithm independent of human development, independent from nature, from other species. The difference between this algorithm and the above-mentioned "fratricidal struggle for survival" is the fact that this algorithm seems to function even under ideal conditions for life for Homo sapiens - in times of prosperity. But even in such circumstances, people are capable of division into hating and warring factions. Driving forces behind the war? Yes, if the species in the case of living in prosperity still is capable of, ie, it can be divided into the race, nationality, religion, ideology, sexual orientation and other "subspecies" ... Everything is for "good" of mankind.
